Bazaars

BazaarsIn addition to the glorious sites of ancient Persia and the beauty of Islamic architecture, the bazaars of Iran are an unmissable part of any journey to this amazing country. On a grander scale than the souqs of the Arab world, Iranian bazaars are normally characterised by high domed, attractive ceilings which shed light on the innumerable corridors below, each of which is dedicated to a particular trade or craft.

Within the bazaar are found not only shops but chaikhounés (teahouses), mosques, restaurants, hammoums (bathhouses) and restful courtyards. The shops themselves sell every kind of merchandise, from humble kitchen utensils to the finest silk carpets.

Although any bazaar in Iran is a fascinating and worthwhile attraction, of particular note are those in Isfahan, Kerman and Shiraz.
